TERRE THAEMLITZ - SOIL
Instinct

- LoveGrove

In Retina, Issue No. 8, September/October 1995.

The follow up to the excellent Tranquilizer CD, this new album offers a more somber side of Thaemlitz. Beatless drones, buried vocal passages, and delicate melodies convey a somewhat darker mood. Full of mystery and curiosity, Soil is utterly hypnotic and seriously compelling. The most intriguing track is "Yer Ass Is Grass," where Thaemlitz juxtaposes lush synth overlays with harsh samples of marines repeatedly chanting, "Kill, kill, kill!" However, the remaining five tracks are more subtle. Socially conscious, Terre subliminally places thought provoking messages under layers of diffused nocturnal ambience [sic.]. Emerging as a true leader in American electronic music, Soil proves that the respect Thaemlitz receives is well deserved. His music is highly unique and original, setting Terre apart in a genre full of copy cats and trend followers.
